The state medical examiner’s autopsy into Freddie Gray’s death obtained by the Baltimore Sun revealed that officers placed him on a metal bench in the back of the van after his arrest, but he was not restrained. During a second stop on Baker street, Gray was removed from the van and placed in ankle cuffs, before being slid onto the floor of the van.The medical examiner surmised that Gray may have gotten to his feet at some point during the journey and was thrown into the wall during an abrupt change in direction sometime between the second and fourth stops. Gray was found lying belly down on the floor while facing the cabin compartment by an assisting officer, who then placed him on the bench. Police picked up a second arrestee at a fifth stop, where Gray was found unresponsive, and kneeling on the floor, facing the front of the van and slumped over to his right against the bench. The medical examiner concluded that Gray suffered a severe spinal injury to the lower left part of his head. Gray died a week after the arrest. All six officers involved in Gray’s arrest and transport are facing criminal charges ranging from second-degree depraved heart murder, manslaughter to second-degree assault. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Next Media Animation’s News Direct service provides daily, high-quality, informative 3D animated news graphics that fill in for missing footage and help viewers understand breaking news stories or in-depth features on science, technology, and health. According to Baltimore's medical examiner, Freddie Gray's fatal spinal injury 'was caused when he slammed into the back of the police transport van' in which he'd been placed after his arrest. John Iadarola (Think Tank) and Ben Mankiewicz (What The Flick?!) discuss on The Young Turks. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. Read more here: http://www.cnn.com/2015/04/30/us/baltimore-freddie-gray-death-investigation/ "The mystery into the death of Freddie Gray grew more complex Thursday as several new reports put the focus on what might have happened during a roughly 40-minute ride in the back of a police transport van. Among the revelations: • Investigators found that Gray was mortally injured in the van and not during his arrest, a Washington television station reported, citing multiple law enforcement sources. • Police told reporters they have learned of an additional stop the van made as it was traveling to a police precinct. • An officer involved in the arrest believes Gray was injured before being put into the vehicle, according to a relative who gave the officer's account to CNN. • A second prisoner, who was picked up after Gray, told investigators that he thought Gray "was intentionally trying to injure himself, according to The Washington Post. What happened to Gray, the 25-year-old Baltimore man who suffered a severe spine injury and died one week after his arrest, has led to angry debate and protests nationwide. For the first time Thursday, Baltimore police walked with marchers and stopped traffic for them at intersections."*

On April 12, 2015, Freddie Carlos Gray, Jr., a 25-year-old African American man, was arrested by the Baltimore Police Department for possessing what the police alleged was an illegal switchblade. While being transported in a police van, Gray fell into a coma and was taken to a trauma center. Gray died on April 19, 2015; his death was ascribed to injuries to his spinal cord. On April 21, 2015, pending an investigation of the incident, six Baltimore police officers were suspended with pay. The circumstances of the injuries were initially unclear; eyewitness accounts suggested that the officers involved used unnecessary force against Gray during the arrest—a claim denied by all officers involved.Commissioner Anthony W. Batts reported that, contrary to department policy, the officers did not secure him inside the van while driving to the police station; this policy had been put into effect six days prior to Gray's arrest, following review of other transport-related injuries sustained during police custody in the city, and elsewhere in the country during the preceding years. The medical investigation found that Gray had sustained the injuries while in transport. The medical examiner's office concluded that Gray's death could not be ruled an accident, and was instead a homicide, because officers failed to follow safety procedures "through acts of omission." On May 1, 2015, the Baltimore City State's Attorney, Marilyn Mosby, announced her office had filed charges against six police officers after the medical examiner’s report ruled Gray's death a homicide. The prosecutors stated that they had probable cause to file criminal charges against the six police officers who were believed to be involved in his death. The officer driving the van was charged with second-degree "depraved-heart" murder for his indifference to the considerable risk that Gray might be killed, and others were charged with crimes ranging from manslaughter to illegal arrest .On May 21, a grand jury indicted the officers on most of the original charges filed by Mosby with the exception of the charges of illegal imprisonment and false arrest, and added charges of reckless endangerment to all the officers involved. Gray's hospitalization and subsequent death resulted in an ongoing series of protests. On April 25, 2015, a major protest in downtown Baltimore turned violent, resulting in 34 arrests and injuries to 15 police officers. After Gray's funeral on April 27, civil disorder intensified with looting and burning of local businesses and a CVS drug store, culminating with a state of emergency declaration by Governor Larry Hogan, Maryland National Guard deployment to Baltimore, and the establishment of a curfew. On May 3, the National Guard started withdrawing from Baltimore, and the night curfew on the city was lifted. In September 2015, it was decided that there would be separate trials for the accused. The trial against Officer William Porter ended in mistrial. Officers Nero, Goodson, and Rice were found not guilty at trial. The remaining charges against the officers were dropped on July 27. The terms of the settlement between Freddie Gray's family and the city reveal new details in the $6.4 million payout are here: http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/freddie-gray/bs-md-ci-settlement-document-20150909-story.html

**Fight Censorship on YouTube** BALTIMORE, MD — Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old African-American man, was treated for spinal injuries following his arrest by city police last week. Gray’s spine was 80% severed at his neck while he was in police custody. He lapsed into a coma and underwent surgery on April 13 before dying at about 7 a.m. Sunday. The family said Mr. Gray previously had been healthy. Deputy Police Commissioner Jerry Rodriguez said Mr. Gray was arrested in a part of the city known for drug activity. He said that officers believed Gray was involved in criminal acts. Facts surrounding the case remained unclear on Sunday, including why Mr. Gray was taken into custody. “That is still a bit vague, but we’ve not interviewed all of the officers involved,” said Mr. Rodriguez. Deputy Police Commissioner Rodriguez oversees the department’s internal affairs unit. Police have said Mr. Gray tried to flee officers before he was arrested. The city of Baltimore was shaken to its core after 25-year-old Freddie Gray died while in police custody. Less than an hour after Gray’s April 12th arrest, he was admitted to a hospital with a broken neck and 80% of his spine severed. Freddie Gray died one week later. Since his death, there have been daily demonstrations in Baltimore numbering in the thousands demanding answers and justice. In response to their cry, the head of the Baltimore Police Union called the protestors a “lynch mob.” Given the broken neck--the lynching--of Freddie Gray, it's hard to imagine a more incendiary comment. At this meeting sponsored by the International Socialist Organization, Baltimore activists speak out, explaining the origins and aims of the movement in Baltimore. Six Baltimore police who were involved in the arrest of Freddie Gray have been charged in the death of the 25-year-old man who died last month while in police custody. www.undergroundworldnews.com/live-feeds/ The murder charges filed against the Baltimore officers who arrested Freddie Gray could be dropped, because the police investigation into his death doesn't support the prosecution's case, it's been reported. Last Friday, Baltimore City State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby levelled charges ranging from assault to second-degree murder at six police officers involved in Gray's death. He had suffered a fatal spinal injury while in police custody. However, officials familiar with the case have revealed that police investigators do not agree with the charges.
